Digital Citizenship for Digital Natives

A lack of fear to use digital devices does not necessarily correspond to an ability to appropriately and ethically use those digital devices for communication, collaboration and publication. We live in the "publish at will" era, when anyone with a cell phone or a computer can become a citizen journalist for an international audience. Simply banning cell phones and network access to MySpace is an insufficient response on the part of school leaders to these challenges. In this session we'll highlight the technologies and issues which make conversations about digital citizenship essential in every school and home, as well as ways classroom teachers, administrators, and parents are helping students PRACTICE as well as develop digital citizenship skills. Like a person learning to swim, it's essential we be willing to "get wet" with our personal use of social networking and digital publication technologies if we are to understand these tools and environments.
